Crazy Hats. The Season of the Drape.

Hello, August!!

The last month of winter has finally arrived and beyond it is the promise of spring and then those glorious summers Sydney is famour for.

In honour of August, I've taken out my crazy woollen hats to wear on my morning brisk walks / very slow jogs.  To get as much wear out of them as I can before that promised sunny, warm weather returns to our city.

Ski bunny SSG....
I found this rainbow pom pom knit affair in Aspen.  As novice to the ski slopes, I'm convinced that the bright colours of my hat actually helped keep me upright through those terrifying first days on Buttermilk.  My beanie also ensured that my poor ski instructor never lost sight of me during a day's skiing / trying not to fall.

Earlier this year in London, this bargain priced beanie with braids and ear pieces served me well as I lined up at Oxford Circus to await my chance to buy a few pieces from the Marni at H&M collection.
But perhaps the biggest motivator for me to wear my crazy hats is that the beanie I was wearing previously made me like The Edge but with puffier cheeks and less attitude and ... edginess.

The ironing or 'reading'  the catalogue... it was a dilemma, I tell you.
The only thing that I'm not that excited about regarding Spring 2012 is the fashion previews that are coming through from the department stores.  Apparently, the Olympic Games have caused both DJs and Myer delay their big fashion parades full of their idea of who the big hitters will be label and trend wise.  I'm not sure if this is going to create much excitement, to be honest.  Looking through the DJs Spring 2012 catalogue gave me a sense of deja vu and it wasn't just the familiar face of Miranda Kerr (whose thoughts I seem to telepathically evoke before reading any of her interviews in the local press, it's uncanny).  Fashion seems so immediate these days that many of the key looks have been on the international fashion and retail websites for quite a few months already.  Not to mention the front windows of Zara.

I'm not just being a bit jaded about print trousers and peplums, I'm also not going to be able to wear them.  It's going to be the season of the drape for me.  Which is exactly the same season I'm currently in.

I love drape in a knit.  It enables you to wear pretty much whatever you like on your bottom half and still look work appropriate.

Cardi - Isabella Oliver, top - Witchery, skinnies - Maternal America, necklace - Red Phoenix Emporium.

Yesterday I wore this Isabella Oliver Maternity cardigan over a long top and black skinnies.

Cardi - Banana Republic, tank - GAP Maternity, trousers - GAP Maternity, necklaces - Red Phoenix Emporium.

And today I risked a confrontation with the fashion police when I had drape happening in my knit and my trousers.

It was borderline Olsen twin in their dumpster chic period.  Only without the Kelly or the fur stole.  Which I guess doesn't make me that close to dumpster chic after all.  Still, I got away with it by virtue of my spending most of the day sitting down at work and being very efficient on the computer and remembering to wear both my ID badges.

Well, it's a big day for me and Baby SSG tomorrow.  We're off to the 19 week scan.  I've been having soothing words to the bump (in between raging at the traffic and what Woolworths is doing to dairy farmers with their cut price milk that no one really asked for in the first place) to encourage a morning of obliging behaviour tomorrow.  If all goes well, Mr SSG and I will find out if bub is a he or a she and we will continue to resist supermarket branded milk.

Talk to you soon!
