Baby SSG’s Space Takes Shape.

It all started months ago,  as many good things do, when I was reading the AWW.  That particular issue featured an article about former PM Rudd and his wife Therese as they prepared for a photo shoot with their daughter Jessica, her husband and the first Rudd grandchild.

My favourite photos from the article were these images of the new grandparents in action in the breaks during the shoot.  I have this theory that very young babies just know the level of parenting experience of the arms that hold them.  When held by experienced parents, midwives or doctors they just seem to visibly relax under the touch of hands that know just what to do that in turn are supported by shoulders that aren’t tensed with the apprehension.  Even if there are cries or protests, they often subside when the baby senses that they’re in capable hands.  It’s as if they can sense that their boundaries are known and that they can relax enough to express themselves through crying, stretching or just plain looking content.

The other things that got my attention in the photos was the arm chair and foot stool Mr Rudd was resting on.  It was the kind of furniture I reckoned I had to have for Baby SSG’s nursery. You know, for those long hours trying to figure out just what it is the baby is trying to tell me with his cries or coos.

Even Rachel Zoe agreed.  This is a still from Skylar’s nursery and features not only a covetable recliner and foot stool but also the infamous house of H wool / cashmere baby blanket that Mr SSG has forbade me to buy.  I’ve tried to explain that the blanket doubles as a wrap for long haul flights, that it would be a heirloom piece but all to no avail, I’m afraid.

It’s now crunch time in the nursery stakes and I’m happy to say that I’ve seen the sense of Mr SSG’s logic.  That we really don’t have the space that Rachel Zoe or the the Rudd family have and neither do we have the passion to house keeping that would ensure that cashmere baby accessories be maintained in an immaculate condition.  Which means that for now, I’ve held back on ordering an armchair and foot stool as well as avoiding the Hermes store like the plague.

Baby SSG’s proposed sleeping and change area.

What we do have for Baby SSG at the moment is this third of the master bedroom.  The plan is for him to share our room for the first 6 months before he moves to his own room.  Don’t worry, I’ll arrange things so that you can all get in touch with Centrebet with regard to how long the three of us will last in the same room together overnight.  Anywhere from 6 hours to the full 6 months, perhaps?

I’m thinking of having this cartoon printed and framed for the door to the spare bedroom aka ‘the safe room’ for the more sleep deprived of Baby SSG’s parents.  If a little Disney magic can’t buy you a few hours of much needed sleep then I don’t know what will.

Miraculously, we’ve managed to find space for Baby SSG’s furniture.  Spare sofas found new owners and other bits and pieces got moved around the house.  The furniture itself got delivered earlier this week.  And I will confess that we outsourced its putting together.  Flat pack furniture and I do not have a good relationship at the best of times.  I always manage to make at least one leg wobbly and shorter than the rest or else have doors that don’t quite shut as they should.  Plus, I usually end up sacrificing the use of a finger or two for a few weeks after my handyman episodes.

It turned out to be a wise investment.  The man who helped us took 2 hours to assemble our stuff – a cot, change table and high chair.  He then went through a few tips with us about adjusting the furniture later which was very helpful.  I’m not going to put the linen out just yet because it’ll probably collect dust over the next few weeks.  I also need to remember to not use the cot as my personal clothes hanger…

Happy Friday too!  I’m off to lunch (again) and to tackle a few things on my shopping list for Baby SSG.
