Lovin’ Life 15/12/2016: Lovin’ the Healthy Stuff.


I still have no idea what will be on the menu at our place for Christmas lunch.  Mainly because I’ve been an almost continuous food coma since the beginning of the month.  An unusually full social calendar has seen me have most of my main meals over the weekend at a party of some description.
Will you just sit back and observe the magnificence of my colleague’s orange cake?  It’s so far removed from the orange and poppy seed syrup cake I had in my mind when she first mentioned it.  This cake features an outer layer of perfectly sliced and peeled orange wheels, then some orange cream and then several layers of soft sponge within that.  It was so light and moreish to boot.
And then there’s the refreshing early afternoon drink here, there and in between engagements. It being the end of the year and being summer and being a season of parties just makes it all okay to have more glasses of something than you normally would.
The end result of all of the above?  Major healthy food cravings and the realization that I actually do love all that healthy eating and living stuff that makes up a quite a proportion of my daily life.
I’ve actually been looking forward to the start of the working week and its attendant routine of  a bit of morning exercise, brown bagged work lunches, fruit with every meal and plenty of water in between.

One powerful motivator behind this zest for healthful living was a recent visit to the new Harris Farm at Westfield Bondi Junction.  Preschooler SSG came along for the ride and seeing all the fruit and vegetables so creatively presented sparked a bit more enthusiasm within him to make more healthy choices with what he eats. He’s keen on broccoli now!  That’s a major win in my book.

Besides being beautifully styled and decorated, the store also features a number of unique and positive innovations.  The first is their fruit sellers cart full of Imperfect Pick fruit where fruit that doesn’t look retail perfect but is still great to eat is sold at a reduced price.

Another thing I spotted was this dispenser in the dairy section.  It’s actually for single herd milk.  You can fill your own glass milk bottle with this milk and there’s information on the counter about the local dairy farmers and where the cows are raised.
