Life This Week 2/1/2017: A Favourite Post From 2016

I’m one of those people who counts the journey to a holiday destination as a holiday in itself.  I love everything about getting ready and then departing for a trip abroad.  The tying up of loose ends at work and elsewhere before leaving, plans coming together, the promise of being immersed in a foreign city and the hours of departure lounge and airplane solitude beforehand.  What’s not to love with regards to all of the above?
This was my pre vacation post of the year and here are some of the photos from it that I’m revisiting as a kind of relaxing into the new year exercise.  Hope I manage to write a few different things about them this time around.
Without further ado, here are some things I love about the departures end of a trip.

That last day at work before your flight.  No matter how long the day may end up being, nothing will get you down.  Sometimes I get a bit fancy about things and wear a scarf and do my hair flight attendant style.

Deciding which Moleskine notebook to pack.  Most of them end up being filled with work related notes but I always have happy memories of the place where the note taking took place.

The bittersweet farewell to Preschooler SSG on the morning of my flight.  Sad because I’ll miss him terribly the moment I leave the house but excited to be gathering adventures to tell him about, books to read to him and the suitcase of shoes and clothing I can’t resist filling up for him whilst overseas.

That last cup of ‘real’ coffee before heading to the airport.

The first Bellini when I get there.

Switching SIM cards for my new destination at the departure lounge with the benefit of couple of said Bellinis on board to improve my fine motor skills.

Trying new food on the plane.

Looking out the window at my destination and seeing the livery of different carriers on aeroplane tails.

A sneaky bar of airplane chocolate and a bottle of local Coke Zero for the taxi to the hotel.

The sad fact that after all these years, I still can’t operate those in room single cup percolators without getting at least a cup of water leaking over the bench top.

That my first night dinner is always something fast, fried and served with a dazzling array of sauce packets.

I swear the grease and festival of flavours cuts your jet lag time in half.

My next trip is still many months away but the excitement is building already.
