Lovin’ Life 2/2/2017: Blasts From the Past.

This week’s Lovin’ Life is all about blasts from the past.  Various hobbies and activities that I’ve enjoyed  but somehow lost the time in my day to continue participating in.  It might have been something in the water or the phase of the moon because I managed to revisit them all this last week.

It’s been over four years (!!) since I had my last yoga class and my body is definitely feeling it.  Niggling aches and pains, tension in my shoulders that just won’t go away and just not being as flexible as I used to be.

So I bit the bullet this week and have embarked on a home practice plan.  My first session was very humbling.  I had to perform trikonasana (triangle pose) with a foam block balanced on it’s short edges.  Those days of completing basic asanas without props are sadly a distant memory but perhaps some practice at home will get me close to where I left off all those years ago.

What surprised me about that first session was how much better I felt in my own skin just from attempting the asanas.  I felt like I was revisiting something very familiar and I’m pretty excited about recommitting to home practice.  The only thing is I’ve lost my straps.  And wouldn’t you know it?  The closest yoga store to me is in fact a Lulu Lemon…

In other news from the Healthful Living Institute at SSG Manor 2.0, I’ve discovered kale.  Not Beyonce’s sweatshirt but actual raw kale leaves.

I’ve been using them in my roasted cauliflower salad instead of rocket and it’s working really well taste wise.  That’s the thing about trying ex-superfoods of the day way past their peak period of trendiness.  There’s so much less pressure on you having to like them that you find that you actually do enjoy eating them.

Remember the sweet potato toast trend of winter 2016?  I revisited it over the weekend and it was a pretty good decision too.

Continuing on the rediscovery journey / trip down memory lane, I found a freebie adult colouring book and my stash of Woolies textas in the study the other day.  I sat down with them both while Preschooler SSG was setting up his indoor cricket set and got to work.  Much more soothing than a half hour or so scrolling through social media on my phone.

I’ve been a bit lazy and unoriginal when it comes to vegetables for dinner lately.  They either get parboiled on the stove top or microwaved before having a dab of butter and some salt added to them.  As our evenings are getting less complicated now that Preschooler SSG is more independent, I’ve been keen to do a few more stir fries for weeknight dinners.

The kitchen bench top looked like a packet of corn flour just exploded all over it but at least I have my repurposed jam jar full of stir fry sauce.  Nagi shared this recipe on her blog Recipe Tin Eats and you can find it here.  The idea behind the sauce is that by making one large batch, you can store it all in your fridge and dip into it as needed for quick, tasty and nutritious mid week dinners.  In the recipe, Nagi provides tips about ratios of meat, vegetables and noodles when using the sauce base as well as flavour add ins you could use depending on the taste you’re looking for.  The mixture keeps in the fridge for ages and I’m looking forward to using it this weekend.

Are there activities or hobbies you’ve abandoned that you’d like to revisit?

What do you like to do instead of zoning out in front of a screen of some description in the evening after a long and busy day?
