Lovin' Life 4/5/2017: Canned Plums and Flu Shots.

Don't get me wrong, there's so much to love about winter food.  Soups, pies, curries and roasts but the fruit?  It's all a bit of the same old same old.  The apples, pears, and bananas that we get year round don't seem as enticing without things like watermelon and stone fruit to break up the monotony.  It's a complaint that's blatantly first world and trivial but it also happens to be the only gripe I've got with the world this week.  My solution to this problem is actually the topic of this week's Lovin' Life.

I love tinned or should that be bottled Satsuma Pluims.  I'm not that keen on fresh plums and I like prunes but tinned plums?  A solid 11/10 for me.  I've been eating them with my oats and yogurt for breakfast.  I love that they taste nothing like fresh plums, that their syrup tastes a little medicinal and also that rich deep muted purple colour they take on as part of the preserving process.  Canned peaches and apricots are a bit too sweet for me these days and canned pears a bit bland but canned plums are perfect.

Do you have a preferred canned fruit?

On other winter news, I finally got my flu vaccination this week.  It's been on my to do list since Easter.  I also got this free badge and a lollipop for my troubles.

Has your workplace sorted you out with a flu vaccine this year?  Did you get a lollipop or a badge or both?

  1. I used to have a thing for canned pears, as it was pears without the messiness and it made ice cream for dessert 'healthy', ha! Haven't had them in years, I stick to the boring standard apples, bananas, pears, mandarins and grapes! The boys love them though :)

I keep forgetting to ask about the flue shot when I'm at the pharmacy - as I'm on maternity leave I won't get it through work so will need to hunt it out on my own. Maybe it means I will get a lolly!

  3. I've never had a flu shot but, despite getting a head cold most years, have never (touch wood) had the flu. As for the plums - they sound like something I'd like with yoghurt too. #TeamLovinLife

    1. That's amazing, Jo! To be flu free for so long. It's an occupational hazard around here unfortunately.

    1. Yes, agree about the differences but I'm learning to embrace them. I like some fruits better tinned and vice versa. Strange.

  6. I get my flu shot on Monday at work. They started them later this year apparently as there's some evidence they may wane after 3-4 months so you want to still have good cover for peak flu season. As for canned plums, oats and yoghurt - was a staple of mine for ages. Might have to bring them back into circulation! Delicious combo.

  7. My mom would pickle fruit (pears, peaches, and figs) when I was younger. My dad would eat the figs within minutes after mom gave him the all clear. My grandmother loves canned pears and peaches. I have to buy her about two small cans each about every two weeks. She likes eating them on her Cheerios.
We get our flu shots at the hospital between the months of September and October being that our winter months are opposite of yours. So in a few more months I will be getting mine too.

  8. Yep, I still need to have the flu shot too. I do love canned pears. When I was a kid, we used to have canned cherries with ice cream - must try them again :) #TeamLovinLife
