Life This Week 4/12/2017: My View From Here.

It's peak making and baking season here and my view is of recipes and shopping lists.  My plan is to do one big shop for all my major baking projects this month to minimize the fuss of each baking day.  Things I need to bake include Preschooler SSG's birthday cakes (one for the party and one for the actual day), dessert for our work Christmas party, a big end of year morning tea at work as well and something for Christmas lunch.

That being said, I actually find it soothing when I actually get into the kitchen and start measuring and mixing.  With all the frantic rush of shops and appointments that this time of the year can be, just being at home in my kitchen with my favourite Christmas albums playing in the background is soothing.  Using my hands and mind on something other than a keyboard or smartphone to create food to share with others is one of the many special things that the holiday season means to me.

As luck would have it, Woolworths just had a sale on two key ingredients of my baking program - cream cheese and unsalted butter.

So I'm pretty much good to go for the weeks ahead.

But I'm also determined to make sure that my view over the next few weeks will not just be the kitchen and the shops.  I'm going to make a concerted effort to also remember to look beyond them and find some calm in things like these beautiful peonies.

  1. I've been contemplating the idea of making a cheesecake! Every time it's made and brought along to my mother's group I want to make my own, haha! I'm not a very good cook though, it's more stressful than relaxing for me sadly, so I tend not to do a lot of cooking over Christmas.

    Hope you are having a lovely weekend! We did a lot of Christmasy things like putting our tree up which was good, and they predicted wild weather but so far it's staying away which is nice.

  2. My husband is hassling me to decide on the menu for Christmas so I can get the baking & shopping done as early as possible. We have guests for the week, so I need to plan all the meals & I'm not good at lists or planning. Sigh.

  4. I haven't done my Christmas shopping yet - but I think I will this week before stocks run low :)

  5. My Mom and I were discussing this last Friday. We're going to be baking this weekend, so we added about 4 bags of sugar, about two or three (or six) boxes of unsalted butter (the boxes come with four sticks of butter), and several boxes of cream cheese. We are also stocking up our freezer with oysters for the oyster stew that we eat on Christmas Eve. This always seems to be the busiest time for us.

  6. I think planning is the one of the best ways to combat the crazyness that try's to take over at this time of year.

  7. Yep quite a bit of making has been happening here but only stuff I can eat. So, my traditional biscuits are not on but some cakes are. I am actually posting about it next week. I am also including my Lemon Meringue pie because I can eat it and I think I will take some down when I visit Dee Why to see Dad next week. Our family totally LOVES lemon meringue pie.
