Lovin' Life 1/3/2018: Back Doing Laps.

This week, I'm loving the fact that I've recommitted to my fortnightly lap session at my favourite aquatic centre.  How ironic that it's taken me until the start of autumn to get back into it.

I love that feeling of weightlessness and power in the water as I churn through my laps.  There's no other way to describe the way I swim.  It's a churn and I chop through the water rather than slice through it with my arms.

Staring down at that black tiled line as I do my freestyle gives me clarity as I work through my thoughts and to do list in my head.  Some may count their strokes with each lap or keep an eye on the timer up high on the wall but I pass my time thinking as I swim.

And then there's that feeling as you haul yourself out of the water.  That pleasing sensation of knowing you've worked your muscles, joints and cardiovascular system hard but feeling also a relaxing of your body because all that cardio took place in a large body of water.

I'm looking forward to my autumn and winter of swimming this year and I fully intend to honour my fortnightly commitment right through to next summer.

Are you a lap swimmer?  Do you find yourself swimming mainly in one season over another?

  1. I was a lap swimmer, and I probably need to be one now - just a little short of time...ahhh

  2. I used to be a lap swimmer and then I no longer had time for it. But now I have accepted a voluntary redundancy I should get back into the swimming routine before I find myself another job.

  3. It's that feeling of absolute weightlessness in the water that I love too. I count laps as well - which is almost like a mantra of sorts that clears my brain in a way nothing else does.

  4. Hi SSG good for you! The last time I did laps was about 10 years ago and before that it was at school. We don't have a pool nearby but I did enjoy the silence when swimming and the challenge of adding an extra lap each week. Have a great week!

  5. Yep, I am a swimmer and water polo player. Trying to decide if I should hit the pool or do an ocean swim today!

  7. I swim laps. The indoor pool I normally go to is closed for repairs for about four months, boo. Can't wait for it to re-open.

  8. I mainly only like pools in tropical countries, which have a sea view, and banana lounges next to them on which I can drink cocktails.

  9. I really need to get back into swimming - we used to have a lap pool in our last house and I loved it (not the cleaning and maintaining) but swimming in the sunshine and the peace and refreshment were hard to beat. Public pools aren't quite the same - esp if you time it when school swimming lessons are on!

  10. I must admit, it's been a very long time since I've swum laps. We have a pool at home, but it's not really lap-friendly. I do love the feeling of weightlessness and quiet you get in the water :) #TeamLovinLife

  12. While I'm not a lap swimmer I do like to do a few laps in the pool when I can. Not being able to take the boys near water with this heatwave has been the hardest thing, I've missed the swimming opportunities!

  13. I actually don't like swimming. But it really helps my back and arms and legs. I am in so much pain in my neck right now, I'm thinking I need to jump in the pool. I just don't like to be wet!!! Especially cold and wet. Eeeek. But you've inspired me. Will write it in the diary. #teamlovinlife
